2009 Hunterdon Drug Awareness 14th Annual Golf Classic

The Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program's 14th Annual Golf Classic "Drive to be Drug Free" took place at the Copper Hill Country Club Golf Course, on May 18th, 2009. Weather continues to be an issue for us, as the last couple of years we have had less than optimal weather conditions, and this year was the same, as it was a bit on the cold and windy side. There were a total of 55 golfers, which is less than we had last year. Given the economy and the fact that there are many local organizations cancelling their golf events this year, we were extremely pleased that we were able to continue this fundraiser, and thankful for the continued support our golfers provided us. As always, this event helped raise money that goes to supporting treatment services for those clients who otherwise could not afford receiving substance abuse treatment. We had some very competative golfing going on during the day, the luncheon food was great as usual, and again there were some great prizes given out this year. Prizes included golf foursomes, restaurant gift certificates, catering gift certificates, golf bags, a set of golf clubs, and much more.

The Board of Directors and Staff at Hunterdon Drug Awareness would like to take this time to thank our golfers, all of our corporate and personal sponsors of this event, and our community members who made donations. It is with your support that we can continue the high quality drug and alcohol counseling and prevention programs to those Hunterdon County residents who could not otherwise afford to receive these services. During these tough economic times it is easy to pass on fundraising requests, and we are grateful for the continued generosity shown.

Golf Tournament Winners
This year we decided to continue our modified scramble which we first enacted last year. Prizes were given for Gross (score) 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners (lowest scores) for individuals, and Net (score) 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners (lowest scores) for individuals. We also continued to have the longest drive for men and women, and closest to the pin winners. In the modified scramble, the 'most honest' award goes to an individual. The recipients of each are as follows:

  • Low Gross 1st Place Winner - Michael Casey (Fiddler's Elbow - Foursome and Lunch)
  • Low Net 1st Place Winner - Jeff Davidson (Stanton Ridge Foursome)
  • Low Gross 2nd Place Winner - Steve Szmak ($100 Copper Hill Pro Shop Gift Certificate)
  • Low Net 2nd Place Winner - Steve Nash ($100 Copper Hill Pro Shop Gift Certificate)
  • Low Gross 3rd Place Winner - Carl Nosenzo ($50 Copper Hill Pro Shop Gift Certificate)
  • Low Net 3rd Place Winner - Ralph Bianchi ($50 Copper Hill Pro Shop Gift Certificate)
  • Most Honest Player - Jim Pellecchia (Free Lesson with Copper Hill Head Golf Pro)
  • Longest Drive: Men - Jerry DiPietro ($100 Copper Hill Pro Shop Gift Certificate)
  • Longest Drive: Women - Karen Prohgay ($100 Copper Hill Pro Shop Gift Certificate)
  • Closest to the Pin - Jeff Davidson ($100 Copper Hill Pro Shop Gift Certificate)
Freddie McCormick walked away winning the Pot of Gold, which netted her $110! We have done the modified scrample for 2 years in a row now, and if any golfers would like to provide us feedback as to whether or not they want to keep things modified or return to a regular scramble format, please email us at gduncan@hdap.org, as we'd love to hear about this topic or any other feedback you have for us.

Most Honest Player
The modified scramble also took the team prize away from what used to be the most honest foursome, and switched it over to a solo accomplishment of the most honest golfer. This special spotlight was awarded to Jim Pellechia from Turner Construction Company. Turner Construction is heading into dynasty territory as last year's recipient was Natasha Grant from Turner Construction. :)
