2005 Recovery Awareness Campaign at Revelation Generation
Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program (HDAP) kicked off its “Recovery Awareness Campaign” on August 13th by taking part in
one of Hunterdon County’s largest one-day addiction recovery awareness events in the Revelation Generation
Christian Rock Event.
Approximately 4,000 people heard 3 different anti-drug speakers, including HDAP’s Executive Director Glenn Duncan. Glenn spoke
about the drug/alcohol problem that continues to plague Hunterdon County, a problem that spiked with 5 drug related deaths in
2002, 1 death in 2003, 1 death in 2004, and 3 drug related deaths thus far in 2005. Glenn also spoke to the crowd about the
concept of gateway drugs (primarily alcohol and marijuana) and how access to these drugs often leads to an environment where
a person is introduced to other drugs such as cocaine and heroin. NJ has some of the purest heroin levels in the country, up
to 74% purity, allowing the drug to be ingested by other means besides needles, thus increasing the popularity and usage of
heroin.
By becoming a sponsor of Revelation Generation, Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program is responsible for helping to provide one of the
largest one-day drug/alcohol awareness messages in Hunterdon County history. Approximately 4,000 people heard 3 different
anti-drug speakers (HDAP Executive Director, Glenn Duncan as well as two other excellent speakers provided by the event organizers of Revelation Generation), well over 1,000 people visited our booth, over 500 “Recovery Begins With …” wristbands were given out,
and over 240 people took part in an interactive event of building (brick by brick, or page by page) a living recovery tent.
HDAP gave people the chance to express what they felt addiction recovery begins with, and we put the responses up on our tent,
building 3 full walls and an archway of responses. Bands such as Further Seems Forever, BarlowGirl, Skillet, Unspoken,
The Katinas and Stellar Kart also participated in the event by putting their thoughts on what recovery from drug/alcohol
addiction begins with.
This was the largest drug/alcohol awareness campaign associated with a faith based movement effort in Hunterdon County.
This was by far one of Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program’s most successful information dissemination events regarding drugs
and alcohol, as well as one of the best for Hunterdon County in terms of reaching so many people in one day. Usually, you
reach 30 people in a classroom, 300 or so in a school auditorium, or hopefully hundreds by putting up a stand at an event
like the Balloon Fest, but Bob and Kim Grom must be commended for their vision of highlighting addiction recovery awareness
into the very fabric of the Christian Rock Fest, Revelation Generation, and providing such a large scale alcohol free event
to the youth of Hunterdon County.
HDAP is a proud sponsor of this event and hope to continue this great association as this shows how a large, popular and
peaceful event can attract so many and still be an alcohol free event. This event kicked off our "Recovery Begins With …"
campaign, to raise the public awareness of what is needed for somebody to begin the road of recovery, and to help combat
the stigma that is still attached to those struggling with drug/alcohol addiction. Our website has a space dedicated to
this campaign (to go there click the link in the previous sentence), as well as other great resources for current and factual drug/alcohol information.

HDAP's own Recovery
Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program is one of the county’s best licensed treatment and prevention providers, serving Hunterdon
County since 1977 and providing evidence based outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment, and science based prevention programming. HDAP knows about recovery first hand as it
set out to recover from a fire in 1998, and then to continued financial misfortune which culminated in late 2002. Our recovery was started by
our dedicated board members, in particular Board President Mike Griffin and Treasurer Jim Casey, and has been piloted since by Glenn Duncan and the tremendous team at
HDAP. “HDAP has grown to again become one of the premier drug/alcohol treatment facilities, not only in Hunterdon County, but in the State of NJ. I’m very
proud of the talent we have assembled in helping people with drug/alcohol problems, and it is the best treatment and
prevention team I’ve ever worked with in my career.” - Glenn Duncan, Executive Director.

"Recovery Begins With ..." Contest Winner
Shannon V. made the winning entry, which won her a Creative Zen 5GB MP3 Player, here's her winning entry:
"Wanting to make a change and taking action on it. Saying one thing and doing another, is not making a change. Recovery from drugs needs
radical change; it requires motivation, be it intrinsic or extrinsic. If the motivation is intrinsic, it is because the person wants a better life.
I've only seen people fall deeper into their addictions, never once seen a recovery. Why? Because people are usually too entrenched in their pain.
People need hope, if they have hope they can make it. People need love and they need faith. Of faith, hope, and love, the greatest is love, but
with all three, recovery can begin."
Mike Gomez of Unspoken was chosen to decide the winner as Hunterdon Drug Awareness Staff narrowed the contest down to 3 people
(notice the really cool "Recovery Begins With ..." wristband he's wearing in the picture).
Unspoken was so kind that they gave us 2 autographed CD's of their latest album for the 2 runners up.
