Revelation Generation 2007

Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program (HDAP) participated in the Revelation Generation 2007 Christian Rock Event. Our theme this year was to continue to help "Shed Light on Addiction". Prevention Director Mary Hanley, Clinician Tara Dyer and Mary's daughter Michelle worked hard on the project/theme for this years event. The project was having people attending the concert to piece together a mosaic of a butterfly, and having people (if they chose to) dedicate their mosaic piece to somebody they knew who were struggling with addictions, or other problems in their life. This years theme combined the "Shed Light on Addiction" theme from last year's event, and added a piece of dedication and hope for those struggling, or overcoming their own problems. Approximately 10,000 - 20,000 people attended this years concert; the best showing yet, for this three year young event.

Executive Director Glenn Duncan spoke for a few minutes on the Philadelphia Stage, at 5 p.m. He spoke about the problem drugs that are common to Hunterdon County, and he talked about the hundred's of people who already had stopped by HDAP's tent; most of them knowing the impact substance abuse has caused to their family or friends. Glenn then went on to ask the crowd to visit HDAP's tent, as well as the other substance abuse focused programs in the marketplace.

By becoming a sponsor of Revelation Generation, HDAP is partly responsible for helping to provide one of the largest one-day drug/alcohol awareness messages in Hunterdon County. Approximately 10,000 - 12,000 people attended the event, and many went through the Vendor's Marketplace. This marketplace was jam packed from the beginning until the event was over at approximately 10 p.m. Well over 1,000 people visited our booth, and over 600 “Shed Light on Addiction” flashlights were given out. HDAP was one of three addiction recovery programs at Revelation Generation, all of whom provided people with information for prevention and referral of substance abuse issues. The other drug/alcohol programs at this event were Good News Home for Women and Overcomers In Christ. Both of these organizations provide a faith based approach to addiction treatment (Good News Home) and self help (Overcomers In Christ), where HDAP represented the secular based alternative for treatment and self help.

HDAP and the 'Three Weather Bears'
This continues as the largest one-day drug/alcohol awareness campaign associated with a faith based movement effort in Hunterdon County. Revelation Generation finally got some very blessed weather. In its first year the temperature approached 105 degrees. Year two, we saw torrential rains, remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto. However, this year the sun was shining and it only got to the mid 80's! The first year was too hot, the next too rainy and cold, and this year was just right! This was by far one of HDAP’s largest information dissemination events regarding drugs and alcohol, as well as one of the best for Hunterdon County in terms of reaching so many people in one day. HDAP continues to commend Bob and Kim Grom for their vision of highlighting addiction recovery awareness into the very fabric of the Christian Rock Fest, Revelation Generation, and providing such a large scale alcohol free event to the youth of Hunterdon County and surrounding areas.

The Butterfly Mosaic
We had another great event planned for Revelation Generation. In 2005, we had people build a house of recovery by giving their thoughts on addiction and addiction recovery. In 2006 we had planned a 9' x 12' mural that would have people participate by giving their thoughts on how best to 'Shed Light on Addiction,' but we had that project rained out by the remnants of Ernesto. This year, our project was to have people build a mosaic, tile by tile, to help support those who need recovery, or those who are in recovery. As you can see with the pictures to your left, we tiled out the outline of the butterfly, allowing people to glue in one tile of their choice either on the outside of the butterfly, or on the inside of the buttterfly. This project was very popular, with many people commenting on what a great idea this was. This mosaic was the idea of our Prevention Director, Mary Hanley (pictured with the project). The popularity of this project kept us busy all day long as we had over 500 tiles placed to fill in this mosaic. The mosaic is now being completed by Mary, with the remaining tiles filled in, grouted and finished. We will either frame this and put it up in our office for all to see, or auction it off and have the proceeds help fund treatment for somebody who otherwise could not afford to do so.

The Dedications
Part of the Butterfly Mosaic was the ability for people to dedicate their mosaic piece to somebody struggling with recovery, or in recovery. If they didn't want to share about somebody struggling with an addiction, then they could write about anybody struggling with something in their life, and the message of support they wanted to pass on to that person. Over 240 people decided to write a message of support. You can see these messages in some of the pictures to your left. We have since put these messages into a book at HDAP and have it in the waiting room for clients to view. We are planning on developing a web page, similar to our 'RevGen 2005 responses of what recovery begins with' web page, displaying all the messages. Until that is done, here is a random sample of messages written that day:

  • George, Stop Smoking.
  • To my sister Jamie: 9 Months, Way to go! We love you. Michele.
  • Uncle Robby: Please stop taking drugs.
  • For Mike to get rehab.
  • My family to all get along ... again!
  • To myself for being clean & sober from Heroin - Stacey.
  • To Leopoldo to stop smoking and drinking.
  • I'm giving this to my two sisters and my brother who I haven't talked to in 3-4 years. The last time I heard, one was in jail another was doing drugs and the other had two children she couldn't care for.
  • Big Brother Kim, It's time to quit. God loves you.
  • For Rebecca: 5 months sober in recovery.
