Revelation Generation 2009

Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program (HDAP) again proudly participated in the Revelation Generation 2009 Christian Rock Event on September 4th and 5th. Our theme this year was "Shining a Light on Addiction Recovery", which built on our popular mosaic theme from the last two years, RevGen 2007 and RevGen 2008 and our initial theme at Revelation Generation "Recovery Begins With ...". From our very unscientific calculations it appeared that over 20,000 people were in attendance on Friday and over 25,000 people attended on Saturday; the best showing yet, for this five year old annual event.

HDAP @ RevGen
Executive Director Glenn Duncan was one of 5 presenters in the leadership tent, there to provide a question and answer session for anybody interested or needing information on drug/alcohol issues. Glenn also spoke briefly on the Main New York stage on Friday night, talking about HDAP and what our plans were at RevGen 2009, and also spoke briefly again on Saturday at the Philadelphia stage, promoting HDAP at RevGen. This is our 5th year at RevGen and we are proud to be the only Hunterdon County treatment and prevention provider supporting and partnering with RevGen since its inception in 2005! Some of the information on drug/alcohol abuse disseminated at RevGen can be found on our website and on our annual newsletter.

By partnering with RevGen, HDAP is partly responsible for helping to provide one of the largest two-day drug/alcohol awareness messages in Hunterdon County. Over 20,000 (Friday) and 25,000 (Saturday) people attended the event, and many went through the Vendor's Marketplace. Well over 1,000 people visited our booth, and over 800 HDAP stress balls and beach balls were given out. As what happened last year when we handed out stress and beach balls, towards the end of the day on Saturday, you could see dozens of people (young and old) having good clean fun playing with the stress and beach balls. We could even see the beach balls flying through the air on the jumbotron monitors that showed the bands playing. HDAP was one of five addiction recovery programs at RevGen, all of whom provided people with information for prevention and referral of substance abuse issues. The other drug/alcohol programs at this event were DARE, Overcomers In Christ, Hunterdon Prevention Resources and a Christian Counseling Center. For the first year there was more than just HDAP representing secular based treatment and prevention programs, and combined with these programs and the faith based approaches to addiction treatment and self help, provided concert goers with a full range of options, alternatives and science based information.

RevGen is the brainchild of Bob and Kim Grom, who own Revelation Generation farm, where the concert is held each year in Frenchtown, NJ. They wanted to provide the youth with a Christian Rock event that was also focused on being drug/alcohol free. HDAP Executive Director Glenn Duncan was approached to support and partner with RevGen in 2005 and did so without hesitation. The Grom's have continued to support the message of substance abuse treatment recovery and prevention, and have only grown in this commitment with each passing year. This year they developed a long-term partnership contract with DARE. DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, and is in over 80% of all schools across the United States. The Grom's, having partnered with local and national programs, such as HDAP and DARE, continues to show their earnest conviction in providing not only a drug/alcohol free event for the youth of NJ and the surrounding states, but also their commitment to doing their part in stemming the tide of drug/alcohol addiction. HDAP is proud to be a part of this great annual event, and we are inspired by the vision the Grom's possess and the commitment and style in which this vision is realized.

The Sun Mosaic
Last Year we had a very successful globe mosaic, and in 2007 we had our butterfly mosiac which we had framed, and hangs up prominently in the office at HDAP (and can be seen in the 2nd to last picture). We again brought the finished butterfly mosaic back for viewing. The globe mosaic was still undergoing being finished (as constructing a 3D tiled mosaic has proven to be quite the project). This year we decided to continue with the last 2 year's mosaic theme, but move away from tile and move towards a colored paper and glue sun mosaic (because you can never have enough glue on your hands).

Prevention Director Mary Hanley (pictured with the mosaic to the left) created the mosaic sun in which pieces of colorful paper were placed on. This sun mosaic received a tremendous response, just like the other mosaics in the past. There are over 500 pieces of colored paper placed by individuals who came through our tent. Many people came back from previous years, and it wasn't uncommon to hear "This is my 3rd year participating in your community mosaic projects, I love them!" Some of the people who participated in previous years stated they were searching for us right when they came into the concert. This project again was so popular that the crowd at the HDAP tent became overwhelming at times. This project, when completed, was a very beautiful sight to see. Addiction's impact in people's lives is unfortunately wide spread, and we at HDAP will continue to work to bring awareness and treatment opportunites to any Hunterdon County resident who needs care, regardless of their ability to pay. We would again like to thank Mary for her many years of service and the creativity she has brought to HDAP. These mosaics are just wonderful and it such a great thing to watch a community of people come together and participate in creating such a beautiful project.

The Dedications
Part of our 2007, 2008 and 2009 mosaics is the ability for people to dedicate their mosaic piece to somebody struggling with recovery, or in recovery, or to just give an inspirational message for somebody who is struggling with their addiction. No matter what the problem was, each person had the ability to write a message of support they wanted to pass on to the person they dedicated their mosaic tile to. Over 425 people decided to write a message of support. You can see these messages written on yellow 4x6" "sun papers" in the pictures to your left. As we did in previous years, we will put these messages into a book at HDAP and have it in the waiting room for viewing. Previous year's books have been viewed by many who entered into treatment at HDAP, as well as visitors. This can be a source of inspiration to those seeking help, and at the very least can help those in the grips of addiction know that they are not alone, and that there is a community of people out there willing to support their efforts at sobriety.
