Evelyn is from Newark where she has seen so much devastation that has occurred from drugs/alcohol and violence. This field was a perfect fit for her
due to seeing too many of her friends die from alcohol or drug related issues. "Sometimes you don’t’ pick the field
the field picks you." Before finding what made her happy professionally Evelyn was a bookkeeper making good money of
but not being professionally satisfied.
Evelyn started working in this field as a volunteer at a Non Profit agency 12 yrs ago and a month later
was offered a job working with substance abusers and running the 16 week IDRC programming. She then worked in
different treatment settings: A methadone clinic, a Psychiatric unit at a hospital, administering HIV testing
in a mobile unit in Corrections, and in a therapeutic community program as a substance abuse counselor (facilitating
groups to the adolescent and seeing them for individual counseling sessions). Evelyn also started a Spanish group
for the residents who did not speak the English. "Everyday is a new experience and each day there is something
to be learned. I continue to grow both professionally and educationally." Evelyn is presently enrolled completing
the last semester of BS degree to be followed by MS degree in counseling. She is also waiting for the results of her
CADC exam she recently took. "I am honored to be in a field that I am dedicated to, and know that everyday will
be a rewarding experience for me."
