Kate Cummings MHS, LCADC

Title:
Clinician - Part Time
Since:
2004
Experience:
Kate retired from AT&T after 25 years of service in 1996 where she was an executive coach and Quality Improvement Manager. Kate started working in the addictions treatment field as a residential aid at Anderson House, a halfway house for women in Whitehouse Station and went on to become a senior counselor. She got her CADC in 1999 and continued her studies for her LCADC and Masters Degree in Human Services from Lincoln University in 2005. The focus of her Master’s work was on women’s addiction treatment and the development of a LifeSkills program designed to help reduce the relapse rate for women in long-term treatment.

From 1996 to 2006, Kate has also worked on a part-time basis at various other treatment facilities and with different types of clients; Easter Seals-Flemington with clients who have severe persistent mental illness as well as addiction treatment needs, Hunterdon Youth Services with adolescents with addiction or substance abuse issues as well as a family history of substance abuse. Kate has done an internship at the Mountainview Youth Corrections Facility working with men who have addictions issues and volunteered at the maximum security unit at Allenwood Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania working with Native American men recovering from addiction. She worked with another Native American man to bring an Indigenous approach to the 12-Steps to the men at the prison, some of whom are serving life sentences for crimes related to their addiction. Kate continues to be active in other areas of the Indigenous recovery movement referred to as the Red Road.

Kate moved on to become the Program Director at Mrs. Wilson’s from May 2007 to September 2008. She is currently working on a Doctorate in Education at Fielding Graduate University with a specialty in sociological research. Her doctoral study is on how people come to grips with loss. She sees a direct connection with successful addiction recovery and people’s ability to deal with loss. She expects to graduate in January, 2009 at which time you may all refer to her as Dr. Kate-Research Geek.
Theory:
Kate practices Strength-Based counseling with a focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. She believes that it is important to focus on the strengths, internal resources and resiliency that people have been able to gain via their active addiction and works with clients to refocus their assets to support their recovery from alcohol and drug addiction.
Hobbies:
Kate really is a research geek and thoroughly enjoys investigating information on addictions treatment, sociology, anthropology and psychology. She also is very active in the Indigenous spiritual community and goes to pow-wows and Indigenous conferences all over North America. She hopes to retire at some point and travel across Canada starting in Cape Britton Island and ending in Alaska, of course doing research along the way.
