Tricky Tray/Auction Fundraiser 2004 Thank You
We at HDAP would like to thank the 130 plus people who made our November 4th, 2004 Tricky Tray Event
(Click Here to see a list of the items) such a great fundraising
experience. Thank you for braving the rain!!! We would like to thank all our staff and
Board volunteers whose effort made this night possible, and so successful. We would also
like to thank Auctioneer Dale Blazure for donating his time to such a worthy cause.
Finally, we need to thank our community businesses for donating such wonderful gifts
and making this Live Auction/Tricky Tray event the successful night it was.
Special thanks goes out to the tireless, and often times sleepless, efforts of Jill Piperata. Jill
was our Event Chairperson, and worked tirelessly soliciting businesses for donations and organizing this event. This took a
lot of energy and dedication, and sometimes perserverance, and Jill did an incredible job to
make this event such a success. She was the driving force behind this event and we at HDAP cannot
thank her enough. Jill also received tremendous support from HDAP staffers Mary Hanley and Tara Dyer. Both
of these women also put remarkable efforts into the many details, from the sound system and centerpieces,
to the brochure and packaging. We would also like to thank all the other staff members who put in a great
deal of time, energy and money into this project, including (but not limited to) Amy Leopold, Helenmarie Fallon, Jass Pelland and Burgess Gordon. We would
also like to thank our Board members, and their family members, as they also contributed so much to
this night. Mike Griffin and his wife Susan Griffin donated their time and a great auction item to the event; Billye
Byrum also donated her time and 2 tricky tray baskets to this event and we thank them all very much. This was not
the limit of our Board participation as we are blessed with a very active board who all participated by contributing
either auction items, tricky tray items, and/or donations to support this event. The staff at HDAP thank them very
much.
Volunteerism didn't end with the staff and Board members, and we would like to thank all the others who helped
in many ways to make this event happen. We would like to thank the great auctioneer Dale Blazure for so gratiously
donating his time and talent to this event. We would also like to thank Helene "The Basket Queen" Meissner and Becky Brooking for their community
support and efforts in putting the tricky tray baskets together. We would like to thank
the family members of the staff who put time in the day of the event, helping to prepare the setup. Finally, we would like
to thank the Elks Lodge #1928, Route 31, Flemington, NJ for letting us host this event there. I apologize if I missed
anybody in this thank you section.

Tricky Tray Items
There were 64 baskets of great items that ranged from skin care to oil change packages.
Each basket's average price was $50, and most were valued at well over $50. The participation
in the tricky tray portion of the night was great, with everybody participating, and most people
graciously purchasing multiple packets of tickets. Many people won more than 1 basket of items,
and there were some people who appeared to be well versed at the Tricky Tray events, bringing their
own bells and custom identifiers.

Auction Items
There were 55 auction items ranging from a wide selection of Bill Healy Crystal, to
multiple ski lift tickets, multiple dinner packages, a dinner cruise around New York, a wonderful
overnight package at the Inn at Lambertville Station, power tools, children's party, and so much more.
Please Click Here to see a full list of the tricky tray
and live auction items. We cannot give enough thanks to our Community Business Sponsors who gave
to this tricky tray and to this live auction. Please spend some time looking at the items and
support the work these businesses did by doing business with them in the future. If you do visit
these businesses and support them, please mention HDAP as this will help in our solicitation for
next year's event!!

Most Expensive Auction Items
The most expensive auction item was the Champagne Balloon Voyage for 2, valued at $350 and it went for $190.
There was a tie for the second most expensive item. This was split between two auction items during this event, and both
went for $160. The first was a great Sunday dinner/overnight package at The Inn at Lambertville Station
(valued at over $250), this was a hot item between 3 bidders and is a great gift as The
Inn at Lambertville Station is known for its fine dining and beautiful view as it sits on the Delaware River.
The other item that sold for $160 was a gorgeous set of Bill Healy Crystal (Cobalt) Set of 4 Wine Glasses
(retailing at $240). This again had many bidders trying to grab this beautiful prize.

Least Expensive Auction Items
The Least Expensive Item category goes to that auction item (in this case 2 items) that
just didn't catch the eye of many ... if any auction goers, despite the great efforts by
Auctioneer Dale Blazure to make them appealing. The first was a Sammy Sosa Framed Picture ... there
didn't appear to be many Sosa fans in the audience that night, and the poor guy fetched for a mere $20. However,
Sammy was topped (or bottomed) by a 7 foot White Cast Aluminum Light Post ....sans the lamp. Now this was a great item donated by
Heritage Lighting, but was still packaged in its plastic, and due to the fact that it didn't
come with a lamp shade, made it a hard sell. Valued at over $90, Dale Blazure did the best he could to try to
get bidding on this, and probably a first in auctioneer history the bidding started with Dale offering to give somebody $10 to
take it. Fortunately this was the "little lamp post that could", and there became fierce bidding war, at the increments of
what I believe was 50 cents. It eventually got up to $15.50 before the bidding had to be halted.

Most Interesting Auction Items
I know you're thinking its hard to top the lamp post for interesting; however, this one even
stumped our normally talkative and funny auctioneer. It had to have caused the most level of
conversations ... and one liners from the crowd. It was a 3 hour limo ride, gratuity included, from the
Van Horn McDonough Funeral Home. I think this auction prize lacked good marketing, because it was actually a cool prize, as
you could use it to go to dinner and a show in the NJ area. It however, suffered from many funeral parlor one
liners including "the limo does not include a casket", "it is a one way ride with no return possible", "flowers and black suits required", to many people asking
if the certificate had an "expiration date" to which the replies were "yes ... your expiration date". This auction item
brought out the amatuer comic in about 25 people in the room and had everybody abuzz ... and yes it did eventually sell for $120 (it was
valued at $250).
HDAP's Executive Director Glenn Duncan brought in a ringer to bid on items, as his 5 year old son Alessandro bid on a couple of
auctions. The Auctioneer did a great job of guilting people by encouraging them to outbid and "bury" the little 5 year old (pictured
on the right), which left them not bidding apparently due to the guilt of making a 5 year old lose and cry. This was actually
a great strategy as one item looked like it had interest until the other bidder stopped, not wanting to mix it up
with the 5 year old. I would fully recommend that those of you who are serious tricky tray/live auction attendees bring
any cute 5 year old, as you are bound to save yourself some cash due to others not wanting to bid against them.
The one item that didn't sell was a great tutoring package offered by the Tutoring Club, Flemington, NJ. This package, valued at $450,
included one month of tutoring (two one-hour sessions per week) in their math or reading programs, grades 1-12; diagnostic testing; and
registration fees. This is only for new students, not anybody already affiliated with the Tutoring Club. If you are interested in bidding
for this, please contact Jill Piperata at 908-788-1900, or via email at jpiperata@hdap.org.
This was a great fundraiser, and again thanks to all of you who supported HDAP in this effort in making this such a success. This
fundraiser helps to support those Hunterdon County residents who couldn't otherwise afford substance abuse treatment.
We hope to see you again next year!!
